    No way I'd buy something that expensive with Intel HD 3000. If you need the CPU of a sandy bridge processor get a MBP. The current gen of MBA is such a better mix of CPU/GPU for what the device is meant for.

    There are more iPhones, Macs, etc. sold here than anywhere in the world.

    Where are your figures to back this up?

    I don't care. I'm an iPhone owner. I don't have to prove affection for Apple products to anyone.

    I didn't ask you to prove your affection, nor do I care what your affections are. I'm pointing out that your argument has no validity, irrespective of where your "affections" may lie.

    Again you are not getting it. Maybe you never been around thieves but they will after anything they can sell. It is not like if they can't get the iPhone they will pick up their ball and go home.

    Of course not, but it deters thieves from using the online system for easy pickins to commit fraud. So it's not as easy to steal an iPhone online anymore, and other smartphones aren't hot sellers, so they'll go find some other scam that affects someone else.

    Yes they are linking to the same site. Have you got proof that The Consumerist is an unreliable website?

    The burden of proof lies with you, who is to trying to make a point with thin, if any, actual evidence. I'm not using nor relying on the Consumerist to make my point, so I don't have to prove its validity or lack thereof.

    On the other hand, you are using ONLY the Consumerist (and a couple blogs that are blindly parroting the Consumerist without doing any research of their own), and just telling me I HAVE to beleive the consumerist because YOU say it's "well-respected." Well, *I* never really respected the Consumerist, because it has a history of blindly following sensationalist leads and has a marked anti-corporate leaning. I'm more inclined to respect sources that are objective and don't have a mission that blatantly compromises that objectivity. So sorry, you'll have to find additional evidence. And I'm not going to do your homework for you.

    What in the hell does this have to do with zip codes. They are blocking NYC. Period.

    They are blocking sales online, by zip code. that makes it the cornerstone of this issue, and has everything to do with it.

    Now you're getting me pissed.

    Why, because you can't effectively prove your case because it relies on a single, un-corroborated source? Then you're taking this too personally. Why you have so much invested in convincing people that AT&T is blocking iPhone sales - and only online - for network resource control, is beyond me. Especially when such a tactic would have no effect on the problem this alleged conspiracy would supposedly solve. And the fact that you need to sell it so hard that it "pisses [you] off" that someone would challenge your thin and faulty argument kinda confirms you don't really have a leg to stand on.

    Considering we have evidence to suggest PP workers aiding and abetting pimps and child prostitutes (fake) in acquiring abortion I don't see how lying and doctoring documents is above them. A lie from the physician and the paperwork for that abortion getting "misplaced" are all it takes.

    Also I'm very surprised at only one website "exposing" her and a couple sites commenting on it. Abby Johnson lying would come out as a bang not a whimper.I don't know how many people have even ever heard of Abby Johnson, so I doubt anything she says would come out with a bang.

    Another website asserts that neither witnesses nor paperwork (http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/flashback-abby-johnsons-suspicious-conversion-anti-choice-movement) seem to back up Johnson's story.

    wtf? 4 years ago my brother (parents) had to pay $2000 for his "tablet PC" from HP in highschool. This works out to what, $470 a piece? Give me a break.
    Just take off a zero; $479 apiece. Not ... that ... hard.

    Why businesses need to often discount in the first place?
    The education sector is a large reason apple still exists in the first place. A discount isn't much to ask.

    Wow... I'm surprised that the comments are all over the place.

    Seems simple and like a logical move for Apple to expand the AirPlay for video too.

    It's obvious that Apple is trying to go wireless for everything, music, printing, and now video. Makes sense and would be a huge advantage for Apple devices.

    BTW... licensing does not necessarily mean $'s have to be paid by the OEM. Apple could license this at no charge or a minimal charge to cover their support and administration. Just like any software vendor does.

    Canada was well aware of who they were voting for. It's not like the conservatives are a new party gaining power. Harper has been there for a while.

    I'm sorry, but no they weren't. People have very short memories and they forgot that the Conservatives really have a much more extreme right view on things. All they remember is what has been going on during these minority Conservative governments, which was a very muted version of what the Conservatives are all about/aboot. You weren't living in Canada prior to their first minority government (IIRC, you moved there sometime last year), so I don't really think you can have a true feel for what was going on back then. Reading stuff online now doesn't really give you a sense for what was up back then either. I was living there during that time, and I remember.

    The Conservatives decided to tone down their platform in order to gain power. This was their strategy (and IMO, not a very honest one). They maintained that toned down platform during their minority governments because they knew full well that if they attempted to make and major policy changes, the government would fall. They were very patient, and they were waiting for this: a majority government so that they could do what they want.

    All the small businesses I know in my area voted conservative because they knew the liberals and NDP were going to attempt gutting them.

    All of the small businesses? Every single one? Did you go around and poll them? Did they all mark their door-frames in blood or something? Surely some (or even one) of them voted Liberal/PC/NDP/Green. Toronto isn't much of a Conservative stronghold.......

    284308
    Blue= Conservative
    Red= Liberal
    Orange= NDP
    (obviously, these are the colors of the winners. It doesn't mean that every single person in each riding voted for the winning party)

    ====================

    And this is just ridiculous:

    NDP shifts to damage control over ‘Vegas’ MP Ruth Ellen Brosseau (http://www.thestar.com/news/canada/politics/article/986662--ndp-shifts-to-damage-control-over-vegas-mp-ruth-ellen-brosseau?bn=1)

    You are saying that for everything apart from the iPhone, having more than one type of model is necessary. But, for the iPhone, it'll be doomed to failure?

    Why?

    I'm not saying its a necessity I'm just saying Apple's curve of sales is going up while Nokia and other manufactures are losing sales with the model suggested in the article.

    I'm not saying Apple couldn't pull it of, maybe they can I'm just saying I'm skeptical of this report. That's all :)

    A little off topic, but question for those who need Office software, and also run Parallels/Fusion: Do you prefer Office For Mac, or do you prefer to run "regular" Office in Parallels/Fusion? Thanks.

    There was one security guy with a shaved head who was excellent although I think he spent most of his time down the other end of the queue. One of the security guys at the front was really nice too but was a bit overwhelmed due to the number of people. There was an Apple guy at the front who was a bit rubbish though and let people in. The queuing was *really* bad at the front. People were pushing in and got away with it at five to six. One guy even barged in at exactly six o'clock.
    Apple apparently couldn't get permission to use barriers from the council - probably because they left it so late to announce when Leopard would be in stores. We (everyone at the front) were *extremely* disappointed with the shocking organisation of the queues. The first 20m or so of the queue was about 4 people wide. The inner two had been there since about 4 while the outer two had queue jumped in at great annoyance to everyone else at about ten to six and the staff did nothing. This is the reason why some of you didn't get t-shirts. We tried complaining and arguing but to no avail. :(
    Shame people had to spoil it but xD It was fun while it lasted :P Did Gareth fully install Leopard on his MBP?

    I know -- just a few minutes with them and they'll have you in stitches.

    :) :)
    I'm so glad everyone is being so cheery, to lighten the mood of general anaesthesia anxiousness. (wow! I spelled it right, without opening dictionary.app!)

    I had a bad experience with it though. My Anesthesiologist was a WACKO. He pushed in the needle too quickly, and injected it wayyyy too quickly. My arm was frozen, yet on fire at the same time. It didn't help that HE WAS LEANING ON IT! So, my arm was frozen/burning, and then when he got off my arm, I immediately got a really bad headache, and started to have palpitations. (I think being on my arm unintentional, his belly just kind of landed there. I couldn't get it off because both of my arms were tied down. That didn't stop it from being annoying, though!)

    ....but I'm 100% certain he's been fired now (you DON'T freak me out that bad and get away with it. Even though I was 13 when I had my surgery, I still knew who to complain to.. MUAHAHAHA)
    SO, You'll have a pretty good time with it.

    the 2nd time I went down, the doctor was AWESOME. (I guess that's the diff. between the urology dept. and the cardiology dept. at Texas Children's) She didn't lean on my arm, and injected it slowly, so I went to sleep gradually, not IMMEDIATELY with a headache.
    ...I did wake up 10 minutes before it was done, though. I could see, but I couldn't say anything. I'm glad that it was just tubes, and no scalpels!

    Good luck iGary! Just remember to email everyone a memo, a'la Steve.
    PS: I'm sending this from my hospital bed using my 17-inch PowerBook and an Airport Express. (http://www.thinksecret.com/news/jobsmemo.html)

    I hope you get well soon!!

    I wouldn't worry too much just yet. As I said above, just because Adobe has decided to proceed in this manner does not mean everyone else will too. I'm betting that PPC machines will still be "safe" for a few more years in this respect. And plus, for many "non-Pro" users like myself, I don't need to run the latest version of certain software, so even if the newest versions are Intel only, this won't affect me much. My Office v.X will still run fine, just as my Photoshop Elements 3, iLife 06 and Toast 7 will. They meet my needs so I don't feel a need to upgrade them at this point in time even if new versions come out (UB or not). :cool:

    Yeah, I think software that is already on the market for PPC may even see another new release (relatively not a lot of work), but I wouldn't count on much newly developed stuff (such as SoundBooth) to be released for PPC. Unless it's being developed in XCode but for some reasons most large software companies don't use it.

    I still think the current PPC line will be obsolete a lot quicker than we are used to :( At work we still use a G3 from 1999 for testing apps. Works great running 10.4.8. I don't think our PPC's will last 8 years :( I agree that Apple will support us for a good while but I think 3rd parties will drop off a lot quicker.

    But you're right, we don't need the latest software per-se to have a use for our Macs... Didn't really think of that.

    I'm not a photographer, so I don't understand the significance of this update, but I was surprised to see all of these integration improvements. Is integrating with Flickr or your iPod or keynote that useful to a pro? I'd have though these were things more of interest to an average Mac user trying to show off his vacation/baby photos.

    Are you pros interested in these things? Or maybe Apple is trying to get the serious amateur interested in Aperture?

    Nothing, directly. I was responding to a previous comment as you can see. There is an indirect connection to the cartoonist issue. My feeling is that there's a general failure to understand why Apple has a restrictive policy regarding what types of apps can appear in the app store. My post addressed the issue regarding the prohibition of pornography, instead of the issue of what defines an app with defamatory content as was the case with the cartoonist. There's also, in my opinion, a failure to appreciate that the lack of consistency in the app approval process is a result of Apple being unable to anticipate every scenario and nuance that is presented by certain apps, and the fact that Apple hires people to review apps. You can't realistically expect different people to always agree on situations that are slightly different. In order to respond to the explosion of submitted apps, Apple must have had to hire a lot of new reviewers. That means that you may have less control over the quality and experience level of the people that you have working as reviewers.

    This is a whole lot of excuses, for a policy which is simply inexcusable.

    There are many other companies which sell applications and content, which don't resort to such draconian measures. When I download a new version of Firefox on my desktop, I don't get a warning that it may provide access to inappropriate content. Neither Apple, nor MS arbitrarily ban desktop applications from being purchased or distributed.

    Apple wants to be a publishing distributor. If they can object to and ban the cartoon today, why not object to and ban an article in The Economist tomorrow?

    Apple has become Big Brother. It wants to control every purchase and every download, so it doesn't miss a single dollar you may otherwise spend outside the walled garden. And these are the predictable consequences.

    No, it doesn't. The line-in port does not supply power for a microphone.

    The combined line-in/out jack on the newest Macs certainly DOES supply a small amount of power for the mic built into the iPhone headphones. The separate line in port on older Macs doesn't, but the headphone port does supply power (on my 2009 MBP at least). It's not the same amount of power as the mic port on PCs, but it's similar. The mic on an analogue headset designed for a PC has never worked on a Mac. The old Plaintalk mics back in the beige Mac days used to have a really long connector, so the tip would touch the power part of the socket in the Mac.

    Some people seem to want a new Dock Connector, but I think the current one is here to stay for quite a while yet. It's thin, tough, and has plenty of pins for analogue and digital data. Plus there are thousands of devices that use the Dock Connector. If Apple were to change the design, it'd likely prevent future devices from connecting to the thousands of accessories.

    The only problem I've ever had with the connector is the quality of the cable. It's awful. It's made from a kind of eco-friendly rubberised plastic, which tends to tear easily. I've had two or three cables split at the connector end; the cable plastic is much too soft.
